Prince Andrew gives up all Royal titles including Duke of York

Prince Andrew, the second son of King Charles III, has formally announced his decision to relinquish all royal titles, including his longstanding and prestigious title of Duke of York. This dramatic move comes after years of intense public scrutiny and legal challenges tied to his controversial associations with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The controversy surrounding Prince Andrew’s name escalated sharply in 2019 when Virginia Giuffre came forward with serious accusations of sexual assault. She alleged that Epstein had trafficked her and forced her to have sexual encounters with the prince when she was just 17 years old, a claim Prince Andrew has consistently denied. The accusations brought enormous media attention and public outrage, casting a dark shadow over the prince’s reputation and the royal family as a whole.

In 2022, Giuffre escalated the legal battle by filing a lawsuit against Prince Andrew, accusing him of rape. Despite his categorical denial of these claims, the lawsuit placed the prince under tremendous pressure. To avoid a prolonged and potentially damaging court case, Prince Andrew chose to settle the lawsuit out of court for an undisclosed sum, while still maintaining his innocence. The case, however, did not fade quietly from public memory. Tragically, Virginia Giuffre died by suicide in April 2025, a development that added further emotional weight to the ongoing saga and renewed public discourse around the allegations.

King Charles to remove Prince Andrew’s titles and eject him from the Royal Lodge

The announcement of Prince Andrew’s decision to step down from his royal titles came in an official statement released on Friday. In the statement, he explained that after discussions with King Charles III and other members of the royal family, they concluded that the ongoing accusations against him served only to distract from the important work of the monarchy. He stated, “In discussion with The King, and my immediate and wider family, we have concluded the continued accusations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family.” He further emphasized his enduring commitment to his family and his country, adding, “I will therefore no longer use my title or the honours which have been conferred upon me.” Importantly, Prince Andrew reiterated his denial of all allegations against him in the statement.

Although he will no longer use the Duke of York title, Prince Andrew will retain his status as a prince. However, the decision means that his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, will also cease to be known as the Duchess of York. Their daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, will retain their royal titles, highlighting a nuanced approach in how the family is managing the fallout.

This decision was made with the full approval and support of King Charles III, reflecting the royal family’s determination to protect the institution’s reputation amid the swirling scandal. This move follows earlier actions by the royal family aimed at distancing themselves from Prince Andrew. In 2022, the prince was stripped of his honorary military titles and royal patronages and removed from the list of working royals, which was widely viewed as a clear signal of the family’s disapproval and a step to preserve the monarchy’s integrity.

The royal family’s efforts to address the scandal underline a broader commitment to maintaining public trust in the institution. By stripping Prince Andrew of his titles and public roles, the monarchy aims to demonstrate accountability and a clear break from the controversies that have tainted its image.

Public reaction to Prince Andrew’s relinquishment of his titles has been mixed but largely critical. Many within the British public believe that he should remain distanced from public life permanently. A survey conducted in 2023 showed that an overwhelming 83% of Britons felt that Prince Andrew should not resume any public duties. This sentiment reflects a significant decline in public support for the prince, largely due to the severity of the allegations and the extensive media coverage that has accompanied the case.

Legally, while the civil lawsuit brought by Virginia Giuffre has been settled, the repercussions continue to affect Prince Andrew. The legal proceedings, combined with persistent media scrutiny, have left a lasting stain on his reputation. The high-profile nature of the allegations has kept the scandal in the public eye, making any potential return to a public royal role increasingly unlikely.

Prince Andrew’s decision to step down from his royal titles marks a critical and symbolic moment in the ongoing saga of his associations with Jeffrey Epstein. Though relinquishing his titles may help to ease some of the public backlash and reduce distractions for the royal family, it does not erase the profound impact the scandal has had on both his personal and public life.

This development highlights the royal family’s readiness to prioritize the integrity of the monarchy over family loyalty. In distancing themselves from Prince Andrew, they send a strong message that the institution will take necessary steps to protect its reputation—even if that means severing public ties with a member of the royal family.

As this situation continues to evolve, it remains uncertain how Prince Andrew will navigate his future outside of the royal spotlight. It is also yet to be seen whether the royal family will take additional measures to manage the fallout from this scandal and further shield the monarchy from damage.

Prince Andrew’s relinquishment of all his royal titles, including the Duke of York, is a significant turning point. The move is both a personal and public acknowledgment of the controversy that has engulfed him for years. It underscores the royal family’s efforts to maintain its stature in the face of adversity and preserve public confidence in one of the world’s most storied institutions. While the chapter may be closing on Prince Andrew’s public royal life, the echoes of this scandal will likely influence perceptions of the monarchy for years to come.
