In keeping with the University’s social responsibility obligations to its immediate environment, the Vice -Chancellor of Delta State University, Abraka (DELSU), Professor Andy Egwunyenga has approved, within the University’s lean resources, the rehabilitation of some failed portions of the Sapele/Agbor Road in Abraka.

As at today, Tuesday, four bad portions which had for sometime inhibited vehicular movement, causing traffic snarl had been attended to, thereby improving traffic flow in those areas.

The University’s Director of Works and Services Directorate, Engr Anthony Igbeka explained that the University embarked on the project because the Federal Government failed to do it, thereby causing a lot of inconveniences to road users, including staff and Students.

He said the Vice- Chancellor was desirous of a high quality job, insisting that it must be done “smartly and efficiently”, hence the high quality of materials used.

“We have to deploy skills and quality materials to get it right. We had it stone based with hardcore before the final finishing. The work is solid. It was highly reinforced with rods, stones, granite and it’s also cement rich. I tell you, only a few Engineers can go how far we have gone,” he explained.

In a related development, the University has donated a fraffic stand at the popular Police Station Road Junction, Abraka to facilitate traffic flow in the metropolis which has become more challenging as a result of rapid expansion of the University.

The Coordinator of the Security and Road Safety Corps, Mr Andy Okoruwa explained that the University was using the Corps to assist the police in controlling traffic at the Site 2 Gate and the Police Station Road Junction.

He noted that the Corps was all inclusive, comprising staff and students, community members and groups such as the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Okada and Keke Riders Association and other interested persons.

Mr. Okoruwa who is also the President of the Senior Staff Club of the University, remarked that the Traffic Stand, handed over to the Divisional Police Officer, SP Fabian Ayameh by the University’s Chief Security Officer, Mr Michael Tagar
was meant to protect the officers who work there and give them a sense of belonging. The Stand has a protective shield and reflectors which illuminate it.

By Prof. Ben Nwanne, Director, Ceremonials, Information and
Public Relations, Delta State University, Abraka.
