When Olusegun Obasanjo led the government muted the idea of launching Nigeria’s first satellite, the then opposition parties described it as a White Elephant project. it took him less than two years to actualize this dream. Consequently, it put Nigeria on the same pedestrian with African nations like Egypt and South Africa.
Former President Obasanjo also sort and got the approval of the National Assembly to set up an agency called Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT) to take charge of the satellite and other businesses around it. Few years down the line, the agency, just like other government organizations in Nigeria, tends to suffer negative growth. This continued until last year when President Bola Tinubu administration made a bold move in October 2023, by appointing Jane Nkechi Egerton-Idehen Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited. This appointment was described by the industry stakeholders as a round peg in a round hole. It marked a new beginning for the agency.
