Nigeria — Chief Ambassador Uchenna Okafor, Director General of the Commercial Motorcycles and Tricycles Operators Association (COMTOA) in Delta State, has received the Africa Network for Accountability Award of Excellence.

The award was presented by Comrade Austin Ude, Global Coordinator of the Africa Network for Accountability (ANA), a pan-African civil society organization dedicated to promoting transparency, accountability, and civic engagement across the continent.

Speaking at the award ceremony in Asaba on Monday, Ude praised Chief Okafor for transforming COMTOA into a model of administrative discipline and public sector ethics.

“This award recognizes a public servant who has not only redefined leadership at the grassroots level but also elevated standards in one of the most challenging sectors — transport regulation,” said Ude. “Chief Okafor exemplifies what it means to serve with integrity, and his work within COMTOA has brought order, professionalism, and trust back to the operations of commercial motorcycles and tricycles in Delta State.”

Under Chief Okafor’s leadership, COMTOA has implemented a series of reforms aimed at curbing extortion, promoting road safety, and formalizing revenue collection systems in line with state policy. His tenure has been marked by increased compliance among operators, stronger coordination with law enforcement agencies, and the institutionalization of transparent processes within the association.

The Africa Network for Accountability commended Okafor for his “unwavering commitment to public accountability and the rule of law,” highlighting the measurable impact of his administration in reducing corruption and restoring public confidence in the transportation regulatory system.

In his acceptance speech, Chief Okafor dedicated the award to the members of COMTOA and reaffirmed his commitment to public service.

“This recognition is a call to continue to do more,” Okafor said. “I am deeply humbled and proud of what we’ve been able to achieve together in Delta State. We will continue to prioritize transparency, discipline, and service delivery. Our mission is to create a transport system that works for everyone — safe, fair, and accountable.”

The event was also attended by representatives from civil society, local government officials, and leaders from various trade unions. Many praised the Africa Network for Accountability for its role in spotlighting ethical governance at both the national and subnational levels.

The Africa Network for Accountability has been at the forefront of civil society advocacy, particularly in recognizing public officials who demonstrate exceptional integrity. The organization operates across several African countries and is known for its independent and rigorous evaluation process for the annual Award of Excellence.
