Apple warns iPhone users about ‘dangerous’ habit millions are unaware of

Apple’s official website advised: ‘Avoid prolonged skin contact with the charging cable and connector when connected to a power source because it may cause discomfort or injury. Sleeping or sitting on the charging cable or connector should be avoided.’

The tech giants implores customers to use ‘common sense’ to avoid situations where your skin is in contact with a device, its power adapter, or a wireless charger when it’s operating or connected to a power source for long periods of time.

‘Don’t sleep on a device, power adapter, or wireless charger, or place them under a blanket, pillow, or your body, when it’s connected to a power source.

‘Keep your iPhone, the power adapter, and any wireless charger in a well-ventilated area when in use or charging. Take special care if you have a physical condition that affects your ability to detect heat against the body,’ Apple said.

A few shared their experiences with their iPhones.

‘I’ve burnt myself falling asleep with a running iPhone before,’ one said.

‘I have mine on a wireless charger on my night side table and the wireless charger has safe mode where it stops delivering power when my phone is charged,’ another said.

A third revealed, ‘I accidentally left mine in bed the other night, woke up three hours later – it was under my heating pad and it was like a branding iron! It’s a wonder it didn’t catch fire.’

A tech expert has revealed why you should never leave your iPhone charging overnight – and the explicit dangers of sleeping with the device under your pillow.

Scott Polderman, from the US, echoed an official warning from Apple after he realised millions might be putting themselves at risk of electric shock, injury, or fire.

‘I charge my phone overnight, and I think most people do, but the concern is actually where the phone is located when it’s charging,’ he said in a video.

‘It’s important that the phone gets ventilation – and if you have the phone next to the bed, plugged in, and you fall asleep and it’s under the covers or under your pillow and it can’t get ventilation, that’s when it can cause injury.

‘Also, you do not want to have prolonged contact skin contact with the charging cord – especially if you’re sleeping,’ he added.

Polderman warned that you should not have your phone in bed with you at all
