Asagba of Asaba Receives Delta State COMTOA Taskforce DG Uchenna Okafor, Delegation

His Royal Majesty Obi Professor Epiphany Azinge, the Asagba of Asaba, today met with the State Executive of the Taskforce and Monitoring of the Commercial Motorcycle and Tricycle Operators Association (COMTOA) at his palace. The delegation was led by the State Director General of the Taskforce and Monitoring of COMTOA, Chief Uchenna Okafor (Onwa Umute).

During the audience, His Majesty commended Chief Okafor for his commitment and efforts in supporting the government’s initiatives aimed at combating illegal activities such as ticket racketeering and the operation of unregistered motorcycles, locally known as ‘Okada,’ and tricycles, referred to as ‘Keke.’

In his address, the Asagba expressed high regard for Chief Okafor’s leadership and his role in maintaining orderliness amidst the challenges faced by the transport sector. “Your tireless efforts in ensuring a safe and regulated environment for our citizens show your dedication to the welfare of our community. It is imperative that we continue to promote order within our state capital,” His Majesty stated. He urged Okafor and the taskforce to remain civil in their engagements and uphold the principles of fairness while implementing regulations.

His Majesty further discussed the importance of a collaborative approach between the Traditional Institution and regulatory bodies, emphasizing the role of dialogue in achieving lasting solutions to transportation issues. He called on all stakeholders to engage with one another and seek feedback from the community regarding their transportation needs.

In response to the Asagba’s remarks, Chief Uchenna Okafor expressed his gratitude for the audience granted them by His Majesty. “We are grateful for your guidance and support, Your Majesty. It is my humble request that you keep your gates wide open for us whenever we seek your counsel,” Okafor said. He highlighted the complexities involved in regulating the motorcycle and tricycle operations and the necessity for continuous engagement with the communities involved.

During the meeting, Chief Okafor provided insights into the taskforce’s ongoing initiatives, including awareness campaigns aimed at educating both operators and the public on the importance of registration and compliance with the law. He indicated that these efforts are critical in ensuring safety and order within Asaba and its environs.

The exchange concluded with both leaders agreeing on the significance of unity in tackling the operational challenges faced by the commercial motorcycle and tricycle operators. They recognized that a harmonious relationship between operators, the government, and the traditional institution could lead to improved regulation and a safer urban transport system.
