Burkina Faso government rebuts ECOWAS concerns, affirms commitment to Security

Burkina Faso Transition Government has firmly addressed the issues raised by the recent ECOWAS Commission statement expressing concern about the “deterioration of the security situation”.

In a statement, Burkina Faso expressed surprise at what it perceives as a biased interpretation of the security situation, the government highlighted the undeniable victories won by Burkinabè forces in the reconquest of national territory and the ongoing efforts against terrorist groups. Despite these successes, he believes that the perspective of the ECOWAS Commission appears biased.

The ECOWAS Commission has accused the transitional authorities of carrying out repressive actions, including the arrest of political and civil society figures and an alleged “illegal and arbitrary requisition procedure” to suppress freedom of expression. The Burkinabe government strongly refutes these allegations, affirming its attachment to legal procedures in the fight against terrorism.

Expressing dismay at the silence of the ECOWAS Commission on crucial issues in the fight against terrorism, such as ransom payments and the tragic massacres of ECOWAS citizens, the government criticized what it perceives as a Commission’s complacency towards countries supporting terrorists.

The transitional government refuses to be entertained by what it considers to be imaginary communications and urges the ECOWAS Commission to exercise discernment in the exercise of its mission.

The government underlines its commitment to meeting major security and humanitarian challenges. He calls on the ECOWAS Commission to align with this approach if it is truly committed to supporting Burkina Faso’s efforts.
