Abuja, NIGERIA — The shocking death of Rev. Fr. Okechukwu, parish priest of St. Mary Tachira Catholic Church in Kaura Local Government Area, Kaduna State, has sparked outrage and grief. Fr Okechukwu, who was abducted from his residence on March 4, 2025, was found dead the following day, his body discovered on March 5, 2025, in a gruesome turn of events. The Diocese of Kafanchan confirmed the tragic news through a statement released by Father Jacob Shanet, Chancellor of the diocese.

According to the statement, Fr Okechukwu was cruelly killed in the early hours of March 5, 2025, which coincided with Ash Wednesday. The diocese, however, has yet to determine the precise motives behind his murder. In their message, they mourned the loss of a man described as a “dedicated servant of God” who had worked tirelessly in the service of his faith, spreading messages of peace, love, and hope.

“His untimely death has left an indelible void within our diocesan family, and we share in the pain of his passing with his family, friends, and all those who knew and loved him,” the statement said. The diocese called on the Takad community, where Fr Okechukwu served, to remain calm and steadfast in prayer during this difficult time.

Fr Okechukwu’s death has also drawn international condemnation, with the United States Mission in Nigeria expressing deep distress over the incident. In a statement issued on Friday, the US Mission condemned the “brutal and senseless killing” of the Catholic priest. The mission extended condolences to Fr Okechukwu’s family, congregation, and the wider community, describing the loss as “immeasurable.”

“Our thoughts are with them during this time of profound grief,” the statement read. “We strongly condemn this horrific act of violence.” The US Mission further urged Nigerian authorities to take swift and decisive action, calling for the perpetrators to be brought to justice.

Fr Okechukwu’s death adds to the mounting concerns over the safety of religious leaders in northern Nigeria, where kidnappings and violent attacks have become increasingly frequent. The Nigerian government has yet to make an official statement regarding the killing, but the pressure from both domestic and international bodies is mounting for authorities to take action and ensure the safety of its citizens, particularly religious leaders who have become frequent targets of violence in recent years.
