Delta State Set To Host Strategic Media Seminar for Community Newspaper Publishers

Abuja, NIGERIA — In a strategic move to deepen engagement with the grassroots media and strengthen the role of community journalism in state development, the Delta State Government has announced a two-day seminar for community newspaper publishers. Scheduled for May 20 and 21 in Asaba, the event is poised to bring together key stakeholders from across the media landscape, including senior editors, media executives, communication experts and government officials in what promises to be a transformative dialogue on the role of the press in state development.

Speaking to Time Africa in Abuja- Nigeria, the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Governor on Community Newspaper Publishers, Prince Orhomonokpaiye, revealed that the two-day event would feature an array of seasoned resource persons from across Nigeria’s media and communication sectors. Their mission: to enlighten, empower, and engage community newspaper stakeholders on emerging trends, professional ethics, and the rapidly evolving media landscape.

The seminar will take place at two prestigious venues: Hotel Benizia in Asaba and the Unit Hall within the Delta State Government House.

Speaking passionately ahead of the event, Orhomonokpaiye declared, “His Excellency, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, recognises the irreplaceable role community newspapers play in shaping public opinion, fostering local dialogue, and promoting government accountability. This seminar is not just a training exercise — it is an investment in democracy itself.”

Governor Oborevwori, who is expected to personally attend the seminar, SSA said, has created an “enabling environment” for community media to thrive.

According to Orhomonokpaiye, the move is part of a broader strategy to position Delta State as a media-friendly investment hub and a safe haven for independent journalism.

“Delta is not just a state anymore — it is fast becoming Africa’s preferred investment destination,” the SSA said. “Under the leadership of Governor Sheriff, we have witnessed life-changing infrastructural projects, economic reform, and human capital development. Today, Delta is rated among the safest states in Nigeria — and we are proud of that transformation.”

He stated that the seminar will also serve as a platform to highlight Oborevwori’s achievements, especially in sectors often underreported by mainstream media. For many community newspaper publishers — often underrepresented — the event offers a rare opportunity to be recognised at the highest level of government in the State.

Within just two years in office, the Governor’s MORE Agenda—centred on Meaningful development, Opportunities for all, Reforms in governance, and Enhanced peace and security—has left a tangible imprint across every community in the state. From improved infrastructure and healthcare facilities to expanded educational access and youth empowerment programmes, the administration’s priorities are increasingly visible at the grassroots. Residents and observers alike point to a shift toward inclusive development, with projects and policies reflecting the government’s commitment to bridging regional disparities and fostering sustainable growth.
