Gale of Defections Strikes PDP Again in Delta State as Foundation Member, Dr Okobah, Quits

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State is facing a severe blow as the ongoing gale of defections continues to weaken its base ahead of the 2027 general elections. In a major political development over the weekend, Dr. Chris Okobah, a founding member and influential grassroots mobilizer from Onicha-Ugbo in Aniocha North Local Government Area, announced his resignation from the party, taking with him over 1,000 supporters.

Dr. Okobah’s departure is being viewed as a significant setback for the PDP, considering his longstanding dedication to the party’s growth and success. Acknowledged as a political heavyweight in Delta State, Okobah has played an integral role in the party’s operations since its inception.

In a resignation letter addressed to Mr. Chukwuka Nwokolo, the Chairman of Ward 2, Onicha-Ugbo, Dr. Okobah expressed his deep dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs within the PDP. He attributed his decision to what he described as “unfathomable disaffection and internal squabbles,” which he claimed had destabilized the party.

Dr. Okobah’s letter further emphasized that the PDP no longer aligned with his political principles. He lamented that the party no longer offered a conducive platform for effective leadership and development, asserting that its internal divisions had become an insurmountable barrier to progress. “As a result, I, along with over one thousand of my supporters, have decided to quit the party,” he stated, underscoring the gravity of his departure.

Okobah’s exit from the PDP represents a significant loss for the party, particularly in Delta State, where he has been a key political figure. He has held several prestigious roles within the party at the national level, including Chairman of the House of Assembly Appeal Panel, Chairman of the Senate Appeal Panel, Secretary of the House Appeal Panel, and a member of the PDP Presidential Election Committee. His resignation marks a crucial turning point for the party, as political analysts view it as a major setback for the PDP’s prospects in Delta State, particularly with the 2027 elections fast approaching.

Despite his resignation, Dr. Okobah expressed his gratitude for the relationships and experiences he had gained during his years with the PDP. He reaffirmed his commitment to the progress and development of Onicha-Ugbo and reiterated his willingness to serve in any future capacity dedicated to promoting the welfare of his people.

The defection of such a prominent figure has sent shockwaves through the political landscape in Delta State. With Okobah’s influence and large network of supporters now severed from the PDP, the party faces an uphill struggle to maintain its dominance in the region. As defections continue to rock the party, political observers are keeping a close watch on whether further high-profile exits will follow. The PDP will now have to contend with the challenge of rebuilding its fractured base and ensuring it remains competitive in the 2027 elections.
