Abuja, NIGERIA — The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has reportedly launched multiple precision airstrikes on fleeing elements of the foiled military coup in the Benin Republic.
According to security analyst and counter-insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, the strikes targeted coup plotters attempting to escape Cotonou in armoured vehicles shortly after loyalist troops in Benin Republic regained control from putschists loyal to Lt. Pascal Tigri.
The report said the airstrikes were conducted within a 30-minute window and involved multiple coordinated engagements by NAF fighter jets operating with full consent of Beninese authorities.
Zagazola cited credible sources saying, “The operation was meticulously planned and executed. Our objectives were clear: neutralize fleeing hostile elements, prevent regrouping, and restore stability in coordination with regional partners.”
The sources added that every phase of the mission adhered strictly to international operational protocols, with efforts made to minimise civilian casualties while maximising the impact on the fleeing insurgent elements.
Residents in parts of Cotonou reported hearing heavy explosions and observing plumes of smoke rising from targeted areas.
Security sources confirmed that the strikes successfully disabled several armoured vehicles and blocked escape corridors used by the plotters, resulting in the deaths of multiple insurgents.
The intervention follows the failed attempt led by Lt. Pascal Tigri, who briefly announced the dissolution of state institutions before loyalist forces overpowered the mutineers.

The coordinated attack marks one of the most decisive Nigerian military actions outside its borders in recent West African history, signalling Abuja’s readiness to confront destabilising threats before they escalate.
