In the early hours of yesterday, the bustling city of Nnewi was shaken by a devastating fire that broke out at Nkwo Nnewi, one of the region’s largest and most significant markets. The inferno engulfed a large section of the market, destroying goods and shops worth billions of Naira. The fire threatened to completely wipe out the market if not contained, risking the loss of an invaluable economic hub for the city and beyond. Yet, amidst the chaos, a swift and coordinated effort spearheaded by one man turned the tide.

While the initial response from local firefighters and market traders was commendable, their efforts were insufficient against the ferocity of the blaze. With the fire spreading uncontrollably, it seemed that Nkwo Nnewi’s destruction was imminent. However, in a timely and heroic intervention, Chief Prof. Joseph Ugboaja, the Chief Medical Director of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) in Nnewi, immediately mobilized his resources to assist.

Under the leadership of Prof. Ugboaja, NAUTH has developed a highly equipped and functional fire-fighting department, an asset that proved invaluable in this crisis. This department, which received a significant upgrade just last year with the arrival of state-of-the-art fire trucks and ambulances, was not only ready but fully prepared to confront the enormous challenge at hand. These resources were initially intended for the hospital’s own needs, but in an extraordinary act of compassion and civic responsibility, Prof. Ugboaja directed them to the site of the fire.

The NAUTH fire-fighting team, equipped with the latest technology and a professional, well-trained crew, engaged the blaze with skill and determination. Hours of relentless effort were required, but thanks to their bravery and expertise, the fire was eventually brought under control, preventing further destruction and sparing the market from total annihilation.

The significance of this intervention cannot be overstated. Nkwo Nnewi is not just a market; it is the lifeblood of the local economy, generating income for thousands of families and contributing to the region’s prosperity. A complete destruction of the market would have led to devastating financial losses, not only for the traders but for the entire community. Prof. Ugboaja’s timely response was nothing short of heroic, and his decision to use NAUTH’s resources without charge for the people of Nnewi was a remarkable demonstration of leadership and generosity.

In an era where public servants are often criticized for neglecting their responsibilities, Prof. Ugboaja’s actions stand as a shining example of dedication to the welfare of the people. By overriding the initial limitations of his mandate and stepping into a role that was never expected of him, he embodied the spirit of service and community that is desperately needed in leadership today. His willingness to shoulder the burden and deploy hospital resources to fight the fire—despite the inherent risks and costs—speaks to a deep commitment to the people of Nnewi and their well-being.

In the aftermath of the fire, Nnewi owes a great debt of gratitude to the courageous fire-fighting team from NAUTH, who risked their lives to save a critical part of the city’s economic infrastructure. Yet, most of all, Nnewi owes its thanks to Prof. Ugboaja, whose selflessness in this moment of crisis will not soon be forgotten.

On behalf of the people of Nnewi, it is only fitting to say: Thank you, Ochinanwata Nnewi. Your leadership, compassion, and dedication have undoubtedly averted a disaster of monumental proportions. You have proven that, in times of crisis, true leadership rises to the occasion and makes the difference.
