Ogbako Ndigbo UK mourns death of African legal icon, Prof. Ben Nwabueze

Says the world, not just Africa has lost a legal colossus

LONDON: An Igbo socio-cultural group, Ogbako Ndigbo UK, mourns the death of a foremost lawyer and pioneer Secretary General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo worldwide, Professor Ben Nwabueze.

Professor Ben Nwabueze or Professor of Professors as he’s fondly called by his numerous admirers is Nigeria’s first academic Senior Advocate of Nigeria; a teacher, administrator, businessman and former Minister of Education and Youth Development.

In a statement last Wednesday, Ogbako Ndigbo UK , said Africa continent, not just Nigeria, has lost legendary legal luminary and the doyen of the Nigerian Constitutional Law – Legal colossus

The condolence signed by its President, Dr Jude Eze; Vice President, Dr Daisy Nwaozuzu and the Secretary General, Barrister Kenneth Udeoka, read:

“It is with deep sadness and a great sense of loss that ‘Ogbako Ndigbo UK’ mourns the death of a legendary legal luminary and the doyen of the Nigerian Constitutional Law, Professor Ben Nwabueze on October 29, 2023.

“We send our deepest condolences to the Nwabueze’s family and the entire Atani community over the demise of their illustrious son at this difficult time. We join all well-meaning Igbos, Nigerians and Africa to mourn and celebrate the exemplary cum extraordinary life of this great legal icon.

“We appreciate his contribution towards the evolution of the Nigerian Constitutional Law, as well as the entire legal system of Nigeria. The Nigeria Legal system would not be complete without the invaluable contribution of this great Icon, Scholar and Patriot.

“We recall importantly that the erudite Professor Nwabueze, during his lifetime, was a strong advocate for the Igbo cause. He was one of the founding fathers of Ohaneze ndi Igbo in 1976.

“As the Secretary – General of Ohaneze in 1978 -2004, Professor Nwabueze transformed the Ohaneze into a formidable, highly regarded non-partisan Pan Igbo socio-cultural group.

“ Ogbako Ndigbo UK commiserates with the whole Atani Community (his birth Town) in Anambra State, the Anambra State Government, Ohaneze Ndigbo worldwide and the Nigeria Judiciary over the loss of an illustrious son and legal Icon. Adieu Professor! Adieu a great Igbo Son. “
