Common Cause Nigeria has called on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the Confederation of African Football (CAF), and FIFA to address the unacceptable treatment of the Super Eagles during their recent trip to Libya.
In a statement from Abuja, Dr. Chidipeters Okorie, national president of Common Cause, described the harrowing 20-hour ordeal endured upon arrival on October 13, 2024 as narrated by the NFF and the players as unacceptable.
Despite having all necessary documentation, the Super Eagles were redirected to Al-Abraq International Airport, which lacked basic infrastructure and safety measures. They faced significant delays without access to food or water, and their basic needs were disregarded.
The situation was exacerbated when the pilot raised concerns about fuel shortages, yet Libyan authorities insisted on landing at the isolated airport, endangering the lives of players and officials.
According to Common Cause, this experience not only violates international sportsmanship but also undermines the dignity of athletes and the integrity of the sport.
The organization is demanding an urgent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the Super Eagles’ treatment, as well as an unreserved apology from the Libya Football Federation (LFF). They are also calling for prompt action from CAF to uphold fair play principles, including reviewing and potentially penalizing national federations that fail to provide a welcoming environment for visiting teams.
Common Cause emphasized the need for solidarity among nations, stressing the importance of mutual respect and cooperation in football. “Football transcends borders, and it is imperative that all nations treat visiting teams with dignity,” the statement read.
Dr. Okorie noted the emotional toll on the players, raising concerns about their readiness for the upcoming match.
“The Super Eagles represent not just Nigeria but ideals of unity, strength, and resilience,” he said. “Their experience in Libya highlights the urgent need for reform in how teams are welcomed abroad. We cannot allow such disrespect to tarnish the beautiful game that unites us all.”
