UNIPORT becomes large driver of ICT in Africa, partners with HUAWEI

Abuja, NIGERIA – Amidst a global crisis that impacts various industries, it’s up to the brightest minds and leaders in the field of emerging technologies to mitigate these issues with research.

The University Of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), Nigeria will be among few universities in Africa to accelerate ICT innovation following a recent partnership with Hauwei to established HUAWEI ICT Academic Support Centre (IASC) in the University.

According to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Georgewill Owunari, with the new partnership, UNIPORT will develop ICT that will focus on scientific efforts on new technologies and urgent applications to tackle issues that impact global society.

In his two year as Vice Chancellor, Prof Owunari has attracted several UNIPORT’s partnerships at home and overseas then noted that “there’s just so much to be proud of today as we celebrate this relationship with Hauwei,” adding that the specialness of University of Port Harcourt is made “even more extraordinary because of our international partners.”

“This is a key strategic priority of our institution as we continue to develop as one of our nation’s very prominent public research universities,” he said.

He said the partnership provides the University the opportunity to spread the word about UNIPORT’s unparalleled student experience

“University of Port Harcourt graduates are doing great things out there all the world over, the VC said, while expressing his appreciation for the alumni community’s dedication to University.

“Kenneth Igwe is a graduate of the University of Port Harcourt. As a worthy Alumnus he facilitated partnerships between the University of Port Harcourt and the world ICT giant Hauwei which culminated in the University becoming a Hauwei Academy Support Centre to train the trainer and bringing about rapid digitalization of the world. We are so proud of our graduates and we wish them the best in all their endeavors.

Stephen Zou, the Deputy Managing Director of HUAWEI Technologies formalized the donation of ICT laboratory equipment to the University.

The UNIPORT-Hauwei IASC Partnership Program provides a formal venue for a community of ICT scholars to convene and collaborate to provide access to cutting-edge research as well as close interactions with renowned experts in core AI topics including machine learning, computer vision, natural language processing, robotics, precision health, human-computer interaction, data mining, intelligent agents, and reasoning.
