This year’s World University Rankings, has ranked the University of Port Harcourt, River State, ahead of hundreds of Federal, State and Private Universities in Nigeria and more than a thousand others across African continent.

The Webometrics ranking released in the first quarter of 2023, ranked the University of Port Harcourt as the No 4 best overall in Nigeria, based on widely accepted performance indicators of excellence in teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.

Against last year’s ranking which placed the University at 5th spot, the university is consistently on the rise, priding itself on delivering a world-class education with an emphasis on academic excellence, scholarship, infrastructural improvement, staff motivation and students welfare in various strategic ways.

The biggest feather to the University’s reputation is that the Chancellor, Professor Owunari Georgewill has prioritized teaching, research, Students and Staff welfare, infrastructural development, seamless academic programs, innovation, community service initiatives, and research endeavors.

Since his Vice-Chancellorship, the University has shown immense dedication and has managed to stay in the top 5 in most rankings, even amidst the long 8-months strikes of universities lectures in Nigeria last year.

Apart from the recent rankings, the university has also received many miscellaneous awards and titles from different agencies around the world.

These add credibility to the University and further makes it a trustworthy option for aspirants thinking what makes UNIPORT a preferred destination.

Vice Chancellor aims higher

Speaking exclusively to TimeAfrica, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Owunari Georgewill said: ‘the University of Port Harcourt has continued to strive for excellence since it was ranked 5th by Webometric ranking in 2022.

“The University has focused on academics, scholarship, infrastructural improvement, staff motivation and students welfare in various strategic ways.

“The University provides the platform for excellence amongst its staff and students and such excellence has always been greatly appreciated and rewarded.

“Strategic communication is key as staff and students and stakeholders are fully abreast of all activities of the University as this motivates staff and students to do more to grow the University.

“The University trust completely in God and has reached out to many strategic partners who have greatly contributed to the all round growth of the University.

“In the near future, the University hope to be ranked the best in the nation through improvement in academics, scholarship, infrastructure, staff motivation, research, community services and excellent teaching and learning.”
