When can Liverpool win the Premier League title?

The Reds are 15 points clear of Arsenal and closing in on a second Premier League title in six seasons | Jamie Braidwood, Chris Wilson

Liverpool took another step closer to the Premier League title as a comeback victory over Southampton was followed by Arsenal’s 1-1 draw at Manchester United, leaving the Reds 15 points clear at the top of the table.

Liverpool are now on 70 points through 29 games and the Reds need just 16 points out of a possible 27 to guarantee the title, with Arsenal only able to obtain a maximum of 85 points – if they were to win all of their remaining 10 games, that is.

Some Liverpool fans may still be looking over their shoulders with nerves, but the truth is that the club is edging towards another top-flight title – but when is the earliest that they could clinch number 20?

When could Liverpool win the Premier League?
Liverpool have only lost once in the Premier League this season – way back in September against Nottingham Forest – and are averaging 2.41 points per game this season. Five wins and a draw would be enough to win the title, even if Arsenal win all of their games.

But Arsenal have slumped to an average 1.96 points per game, after struggling with injuries to attacking players and are now without a win in three in the Premier League.

Arsenal play twice more before Liverpool’s next game against Everton on Wednesday April 2. If they drop points against either Chelsea or Fulham, Liverpool would move to the brink of the title with wins in the Merseyside derby and against Fulham on Sunday 6 April.

Given their current rate of points per game, Arsenal are heading for just 75 points. With that in mind, just two more wins would put Liverpool ‘clear’ of Arsenal’s current trajectory.

Liverpool then host West Ham on Sunday 13 April, and if it’s not done by then it looks ‘likely’ that the games against Leicester on Sunday 20 April or Tottenham on 27 April could see the Reds cross the line.

It also looks likely that Liverpool could build a mathematically unassailable lead before facing the Gunners – leaving Arsenal potentially having to roll out the guard of honour for the Reds on 10 May.

Remaining Premier League fixtures
Liverpool have just 10 matches left to play, while Arsenal have 11. Their game in hand against Chelsea will take place on the weekend of 16 March, when the Reds are contesting the Carabao Cup final.

Each side’s remaining fixtures are as follows:

Liverpool
Points: 70 (played 29)

Points per game (PPG): 2.41

Remaining opponents’ PPG: 1.42

Points per game (PPG): 1.96

Remaining opponents’ PPG: 1.36
